Installation Steps for a Basic Wood Pergola

Prepare the Site: Level the ground where the pergola will be installed. For grassy areas, you may need to remove sod to create a stable foundation.
Install Footings: Dig holes for the footings to the required depth (which can depend on your local frost line) and diameter. Fill the holes with concrete and insert post anchors before the concrete sets. The exact depth and width will depend on your pergola’s size and the local building codes.
Erect the Posts: Place the posts into the post anchors. Use a level to ensure they are perfectly vertical and brace them temporarily with stakes and strings.
Attach Beams: Secure horizontal beams to the top of the posts. This usually requires at least two people to ensure proper alignment and safety. The beams can be attached with bolts or long screws.
Install Cross Beams: Lay out the cross beams perpendicular to the main beams and space them evenly. These can be notched to fit over each other or the beams for additional stability and a more finished look. Attach the cross beams with screws or nails.
Add Bracing: For additional stability, install diagonal bracing in the corners between the posts and beams.
